Download Silent Hunter 2 PC Game 2001
That's the mercurial nature of Silent Hunter 2. Your emotions swing from euphoria to despair in seconds as you alternate from hunter-killer to passive prey. Sub sim fans have had a pretty good time with Ubisoft Romania's graphically sumptuous Silent Hunter 3, 4, and Vofferings but the franchise first got its Windows sea legs in 2001 with the Ultimation-designed SH2. The sim's well-researched U-boat dynamic created a sense of historical imperative that transcended convention. During key moments, it actually made you feel like you were sharing claustrophobic boat space with Kriegsmarine veterans like Otto Kretschmer and Erich Topp.
Some hoarding-afflicted simmers (like myself) still own original boxed retail copies of Silent Hunter 2. Today, the best way to revisit this naval pioneer is to grab the fully patched, $9.99 download at GOG (opens in new tab) . You won't have to seek out and install patches or scour message boards looking for tips to make it work with Vista or Windows 7. I had the game downloaded and running on my Win7 64-bit PC in less than 20 minutes.
Double-clicking the Silent Hunter 2 desktop icon launches the game in less than 10 seconds, and after selecting your historical or user-created mission, you'll be at the helm a few seconds. (A refreshing change from the languid 3D loading screens in Ubisoft's later Silent Hunter chapters.) What's more, you won't have to worry about any Starforce or DRM issues with this 2001 release, because it hails from an era when respect for your consumers trumped zealous IP rights enforcement.

A TOUCH OF DESERT--------------------------------------------------------------------------------1 GETTING READY1.1 Part 1 tells you what you need to have, and do, for trouble-free gaming sessions.THE PATCHES1.2 During the life of your computer and of these games, you may need to reinstall SH2 and/or DC. To make the reinstallation of these patches much easier, follow this tip: (See also para 8.4) Tip No. 1 Save yourself download time by saving a back-up copy of these patches in a "Patches" folder adjacent to your SH2 or DC games folder. You'd be wiser yet if you back these up on a Zip Drive or CD-RW.1.3 The original SH2 and/or Destroyer Command must be installed and running properly. See the game Manual if either game isn't running right. There is some additional help in Troubleshooting in Section 8.1.4 Next, install the SH2Patch1.1.exe or DCPatch1.1.exe patch from ubi.com Select "Support" then "Game Patches."1.5 Then the original Ubi Soft/Ultimation game engine in both games needs to be replaced by the WPL engine, PMv1.03 Because the Ubi engine is unstable and tends to kick players out of the game, WPL arranged with Duane Doutel of DoutelSoftware Services to produce a replacement with many improvements. Once the replacement engine is installed, you can no longer play with Ubi players; you now have access to thousands of WPL players in 22 Flotillas.Download it from our Home Page: _flotilla@rogers.com/downloads.htmlTip No. 2The above PMv1.03 patch has a comprehensive "Read Me" that appears as part of the installation. There is much useful data here; you learn something each time you read it!Here's how to save it so you can read it without having to do another installation. Select all; Copy and Paste to an email; Save as the email into your "Patches" folder from tip no. 1.THE MISSIONS1.6 Both games come with some multiplayer missions, but you can add a variety of additional ones:NOTETips 3 and 4 are replaced with:Downloading all of Jester's excellent SH2 and DC multiplayer missions by using a link at the 7th's Home site. Thanks to a co-operative effort by Jester and our Webmaster, Osis, go to: _flotilla@rogers.com/downloads.htmland click on: Jester's Latest Custom Mission Installer DownloadThis Downloader will install all of Jester's current missions into their proper locations in SH2 (and DC.) Phenomenally faster!!!Tip No. 3 But you can still read about individual missions at this link.Downloading several excellent SH2 and DC multiplayer missions from Jester's site: nowakjim/games/SH2DC/index.htmlTip No. 4Just as in tip no.1, you should save a copy of what you download from Jester's site in a folder(s) next to your games(s) and/or CD-RW. Saves you from having to go through all that download procedure again!1.7 When we meet online, the host chooses a mission and offers it to the rest of us. Usually we reply "Yes." The only time the suggested mission is not accepted is when one of us doesn't have it in our computer; therefore it's strongly suggested that you download his missions as soon as possible so that you can reply "Yes" and avoid embarrassment when any mission is offered to you.Tips 5 and 6 are replaced with the "NOTE" above Tip No. 3.Tip No. 5Because there are many missions and because the downloading and installation process is a bit lengthy, and certainly repetitive, you might like to use a process I came up with to make the installations easier and faster for myself and less prone to mistakes. Install 3 or 4 of his missions in one session and you'll see what I mean. Then let me know if you want my installation aid: A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO INSTALL JESTER'S MISSIONS Tip No. 6 If you have only a few missions downloaded, then, in consideration for the other Skippers and so that you don't delay the selection of a mission, it would be very helpful if you keep a note handy of the mission titles that you have downloaded so that the host can offer a mission that you have. But do get them all installed as soon as you can.SOME PRACTICE1.8 You can play in both AI and in Multiplayer modes on your own.In AI, you can save your games during play and reload them when you want to go back and perfect a technique. Not so with Multiplayer missions, however, playing them on your own gives you a chance to get to know what you're in for!Click on Multiplayer, then select Host. In moments you can select whatever missions are installed. However there are six or eight that require a human opponent, so be prepared to skip those.1.9 When you start playing a mission, you need to know such things as: a) which direction do I go in when there's nothing but sea all around me?b) which convoy icon do I go for when there is more than one showing?c) which icon(s) has the mission objective(s) in it?As a host, you should be able to tell, for instance, which missions have sufficient U-boats and/or Destroyers according to what the players need; otherwise you might have to keep looking. Not very professional...Tip No. 7Use a 3x5 in. index card to record useful details of each mission. For example:CONVOY TO FREETOWN 250 deg (Mission Title & Approximate Intercept Course)*Inter-op U=4 IX D=4 Benson (Mission Type Number of Vessels & Type)RADAR Aircraft FaT Torps (Add these only if present in the mission)U=20K (U-boat Objective (Sink at least 20,000 tones)D=25% max loss 08:30 Partial (Destroyer Objective Mission Time & Weather)* Inter-op means a mission designed to play with both SH2 and DC.* Co-op means a mission where all the players are on the same side in SH2 or DC.You can add whatever else you'd like such as whether the mission has RADAR, Aircraft, or FaT torpedoes. On the back of the card, you could add helpful comments.HOW WE FIND OTHER PLAYERS1.10 We use ICQ to meet up with the other players. This is what ICQ does for us:a) Whenever you go on line and want to play, ICQ tells others that you're on line and looking for a game.b) ICQ also tells you when others are looking for a game. You'll find all the details at these two "War Room" sites at Tides:For 800x600: =1204Or for 1024x768 go to: =9681.11 After you download ICQ Lite and have it running...a) get our ICQ numbers from either of these two sites; enter each ICQ number into the ICQ "Find" menu; select the "Add/Invite Users" tab.b) then you can add us to your contact list;c) but to have two-way contact, you'll still need to "ask for authorization" and "give authorization" with each of us; then...d) we need to know the days and times that you figure you'll be online for a game;e) and whether you have downloaded all of Jester's missions; email me or post your details. Now we can add you to the above sites so others will know when to look for you. Then you're really ready to join in multiplay and...Have Fun!Tip No. 8You can rename your ICQ contact names. If you use a "code" such as TT- as in the following ICQ Chart, you can quickly differentiate our multiplayer members from among the other names in your Contact List.THE TT- CHART1.12 This is a sample of the kind of ICQ data that we need; from the ICQ postings about online multiplay of SH2 and DC. You can get on with other things while you're online, knowing that when another Skipper comes online for a game, you'll know it!Post your name, U-boat and ICQ numbers below, and we'll add you above!Download ICQ 4 Lite from Then when you go online, select "Available" in the ICQ menu whenever you want to multiplay in SH2 or DC.AuthorizationsOne of the first things about using ICQ is exchanging "Authorizations" with your fellow skippers - you request, and give, permission to contact each other! "TT-123..."You can "rename" the names you see in your list of contacts. After you've added friends and relatives to your list, you'll need a quick and easy way to find the Skippers' names. Include TT and U-boat number with their name... as above."Available..."This is nothing hard and fast, just a rough idea of when you might be available. An improved version, without the "Print Screen" graphic, is available for those who don't have email space. A real time and frustration saver! Post a request for it and tell me with or without the graphic. (Much easier "with")Then we'll really be ready to...Have Fun! Speedy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------2 "LET'S HAVE A GAME!"MEETING ON ICQ2.1 Turn on your ICQ and click on "Available" in the menu. Now you can meet up with fellow Skippers, chat a bit, and decide who will host a mission. You'll find ICQ is just fine when there's just the two of you.Tip No. 9When there are more than two of you on ICQ and you want to type the same thing to another, you can Copy and Paste your text onto the other message window(s).When three or more persons get on ICQ, we usually go to the 7th's Chat Room: =16392Tip No. 10Leave ICQ running when you've gone to Chat so any late arrivals can join you.NOTEWhile in ICQ... - you can Copy and Paste to other message windows;- you can Save any or all of the text in a session, to another file, or email;- the more there are in the session, the more inconvenient to converse. While in Chat...- you cannot Copy and Paste anything into, or out of, Chat;- you cannot Save anything;- but anything you type, is seen by all"WHAT'S YOUR IP?"2.2 The host should be the one who has the fastest computer and most bandwidth. Before you leave ICQ or Chat to "Join" a game, you need to get the host's IP number so that you can connect with his computer during the multiplayer connect process before you start the mission. If you are the "Host" you need to tell others what your IP is.If you have XP, one way you can find your IP is by right clicking on your "Twin-Monitor-Connect-Icon" in the lower right tray. Then select the "Details" tab. "Client IP Address" is the number you want. What operating system do you have? How do you find your IP?Tip No. 11Keep a record on a 3x5 Index card of the IP numbers of all hosts who have cable; their IP numbers never change and you'll be happy you did the next time you loose your data.WHAT TO TURN OFF2.3 The more programs you have running in the background, the slower your computer will process data. This will probably cause pauses, skips or jumps during a mission, so that ships will suddenly change position. Not good at all when that happens after you fire a torp! As a minimum, you should turn off ICQ so you don't get a call during a game; and you might like to consider disabling your firewall; depending on make, it may interfere.See Troubleshooting (Section 8) for more information.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------3 AT THE "PAUSE" SCREEN"RADARS OFF!"3.1 If your U-boat has RADAR, it will be on when you release the "Pause" button.Tip No. 12Before you release the "Pause" button, there's one more thing you need to turn off... the RADAR! Leaving it on, gives your position away to the enemy! Not good, especially against a human enemy! Type a message to the others, telling them to turn theirs off too!3.2 The uboat RADARs were not as good as the Allies' so if you go looking for the enemy, they'll already know where you are!You can read about RADAR and its founder, Sir Watson-Watt at: GAME TALK and RADIO SILENCE3.3 Click at the bottom of your game screen to bring up the chat window. To send your message, click on "Team" so that the enemy doesn't hear your message. NEVER, EVER transmit using "All" while underwater... or even when surfaced!!! They CAN tell where you are that way!!! And the closer you are to the enemy, the greater the risk of being located by a destroyer! The following is from the Manual file on the Destroyer Command game CD and is part of the instructions about the Message Log window:"When you have completed your message, click on the Team or All button depending on who you want to view the message." (Note that there has been some confusion in the past about which button to press,) "Using team chat or posting a map note now causes the player's flagship to become an active radar emitter. Submarines are prohibited from using team chat or posting map notes when HF/DF (High Frequency Direction Finder) is enabled unless they are surfaced or have a working periscope up."RADIO SILENCE HORROR STORIES3.4 In pitch darkness, while surfaced and proceeding away from the combat area to do my torpedo transfers, I was sent a message requiring an answer. There were two destroyers, one on each side of me, within striking distance but not aware of me. As soon as I replied, one of them turned towards me.For the next four hours, I was hounded, eventually by both destroyers. My damage gradually got worse and I eventually ran out of compressed air and was destroyed.3.5 In a recent mission, three of us were strung out in line, chasing down destroyer contact(s). One of the uboats transmitted several times, giving away our position and robbing us of our ele
